Del Mar College will host its fifth Mexican-American Studies Program Summer Seminar covering the program, literature, music, U.S. history and politics, art, humanities and the Spanish language. During this free two-day event, participants may earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Award-winning author Diana Lopez, a Del Mar College graduate and Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Houston-Victoria, will give the Mike M. Anzaldúa Jr. Keynote Address on Saturday, July 21, at 9 a.m. Lopez is the author of several books, including Coco: A Story about Music, Shoes, and Family, which is the novel adaptation of the Hollywood film Coco. Her address is titled “Mother Goose is not my Abuela: Why Children Need Brown Faces in Their Books” and draws from her experience as a teacher, writer and reader. Lopez will discuss diversity in children’s books, especially as it relates to the Mexican-American experience. Some questions she will explore are: What are the consequences for young readers when they fail to see people of color in their books? How are educators and publishers addressing this issue? What can families and communities do to make sure our children feel story worthy? Lopez’s presentation is sponsored by the Del Mar College Title V Program. For more information about the author and her work, visit http://dianalopezbooks.com/. Registration for this free two-day event is recommended.
