An ode to this soothing YouTube channel where a woman calmly makes everything she needs

If you need to just relax and peacefully zone out while watching someone be silently capable, I have the YouTube channel for you.

李子柒, very roughly translated as Seven Plums, is a newer YouTube channel that features a Chinese woman calmly, confidently creating everything she needs basically from scratch.

The channel is very similar to the popular Primitive Technology account because each video only contains her silently making something from the barest essentials. The difference is that Seven Plums specializes in lifestyle videos, wherein she makes her own paper, makeup from flowers, and even her own dye for a dress out of grape skins.  Read more…

New iPhones might have slower data transfer speeds all because of Intel

Apple might finally ditch Qualcomm, the supplier of LTE modems in the iPhone, after getting locked into legal disputes over patent royalties last year.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims, according to MacRumors, that Intel might be the exclusive supplier of modems for all the new iPhones launching later this year.

Why should you care? Because it could mean the new iPhones might have potentially slower data transfer speeds.

First a quick history lesson. Up until the iPhone 7, Qualcomm was the exclusive supplier for “baseband modem” chips for the iPhone.  Read more…

Your iPhone X/8 battery could wear out in about 18 months!

If you’re an iPhone X owner like I am, then reading this headline could be troubling!

OK, first a little about the battery inside the iPhone. According to Apple, the battery ” is designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles,” and beyond that, the battery is considered worn and heading towards end-of-life. Some batteries can and do retain more than 80 percent charge after well over 500 recharge cycles (I have an iPhone 6 Plus with over 800 recharge cycles that’s still above the 80 percent mark), once you hit 500 recharge cycles, your battery is on borrowed time.

So what’s going on here?

It seems that Apple adding the speed and convenience of wireless and fast charging is masking the fact that newer iPhones are placing quite a heavy demand on battery life, and that the device — even the larger Plus devices — are needing to be topped up more regularly than older devices, and that this will wear out the battery even faster than we’ve seen previously.

If you upgrade every year, this isn’t going to be a problem for you, but if you’re the kind of person who likes to get a few years out of their iPhone before getting a new one, this is something that you need to think about. You either need to take measures to minimize battery usage during the day, or plan for a battery replacement down the line.
