Jennifer Lawrence, Jodie Foster will reportedly replace Casey Affleck to present Best Actress

Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster will present the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards Sunday in lieu of Casey Affleck, Variety reports.

The news comes after nearly a month of speculation as to who would replace Affleck. The Best Actor winner decided not to present at the end of January because he feared he’d become a distraction.

The Manchester by the Sea star was accused of sexual harassment in two 2010 lawsuits, which mostly went under the radar, until the #MeToo movement shined a spotlight on men with histories of sexual misconduct allegations. Affleck’s publicists have characterized the lawsuits as extortion attempts. The producer and cinematographer of I’m Not Here, Affleck’s 2010 film, are the accusers. Their cases were settled out of court, with no monetary figure disclosed. Read more…

Imagine the hits from ‘Hamilton’ given the ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic treatment

Fans of Hamilton need to hit play on ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s bonkers new medley.

Dubbed “The Hamilton Polka,” Yankovic’s new release is a crazy mashup of hits from the Broadway musical, with takes on “My Shot,” “Wait For It,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” and more.

It’s the next chapter in Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s year-long #Hamildrops project, which sees new Hamilton content dropping every month.

The first taste came in December, with a recording of “Ben Franklin’s Song,” by The Decemberists, and was followed by Nas’ “Wrote My Way Out” featuring Aloe Blacc, Dave East and Miranda himself. Read more…

What is happening? Did Stephen Colbert just find Donald Trump’s opinion on something “reasonable?”

That’s exactly what went down on The Late Show on Wednesday, when the talk show host was left flabbergasted by the president’s stance in a meeting with members of Congress on gun control.

— The Late Show (@colbertlateshow) March 1, 2018

During the meeting, Trump accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of being unable to pass gun control legislation. No surprise there. (In reality, a Republican-led Congress opposed 23 executive actions on gun control signed by Obama). Read more…

Listen to an unreleased Amy Winehouse demo, recorded before she was signed

A lost demo featuring a 17-year-old Amy Winehouse has emerged, and it’s predictably excellent.

The 2001 track “My Own Way,” was unearthed by composer and musician Gil Cang, then shared with Camden New Journal.

A Camden local and manager of reggae label Tuff Scout, Cang told the publisher he recorded the track with a young Winehouse in his Hornsey Road studio, before her fateful signing to Island Records and 2003 debut album Frank.

“We’d been writing quite a lot of pop tunes, doing a lot of pop promos with various artists who would come in, many of various, dubious talent,” Cang told CNJ.  Read more…

Neil Young has a bone to pick with Google, Amazon and Facebook

Neil Young has had it with major tech companies undervaluing musicians.

The legendary musician delivered an emotional, targeted rant at Google, Facebook, Amazon and similar tech giants on Friday, accusing them of underpaying artists.

“Today, in the age of Facebook, Google and Amazon, it’s hard to tell how a new and growing musical artist could make it in the way we did,” Young wrote in a post published by Neil Young Archives.

“The Tech Giants have figured out a way to use all the great music of everyone from all time, without reporting an artist’s number of plays or paying a fucking cent to the musicians. Aren’t they great companies!!!  Read more…
